Google again named best company to work for in US in 2013 by Fortune magazine

For the 16th year, Fortune magazine has named the top workplaces in corporate America, and Mountain View, California-based Google has once again topped the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2013, duplicating its number one rank on the 2012 list and winning the crown for the fourth time overall.

According to the Fortune snapshot of Google, the Internet search engine “juggernaut” won the award for offering “100,000 hours of subsidized massages” along with three new wellness centers and a new seven-acre sports complex that includes a roller hockey rink; basketball, bocce, and shuffle ball courts; and horseshoe pits.

The company founded by Stanford University students Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998 also offers its 34,311 current U.S. employees onsite child care, an onsite fitness center, subsidized gym memberships, job sharing programs, and telecommuting.

The next highest ranked Bay Area-based employers in the Fortune Best Companies to Work For list were NetApp of Sunnyvale at 6th, DPR Construction of Redwood City at 15th, Salesforce.com of San Francisco at 19th, and Intuit of Mountain View at 22nd.

The method used to pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For included Fortune partnering with the Great Place to Work Institute, a global research and consulting firm, to conduct an extensive employee survey of corporate America.

More than 277,000 employees at 259 companies participated in this year’s survey, which asked questions related to management credibility, job satisfaction, camaraderie, pay, benefit programs, hiring practices, internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts.

The Top Ten Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2013 are:

  1. Google, Inc. (34,311 U.S. employees)
  2. SAS (6,373 U.S. employees)
  3. CHG Healthcare Services (1,378 U.S. employees)
  4. The Boston Consulting Group, Inc. (2,314 U.S. employees)
  5. Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. (43,927 U.S. employees)
  6. NetApp (7,426 U.S. employees)
  7. Hilcorp Energy Company (1,012 U.S. employees)
  8. Edward Jones (35,114 U.S. employees)
  9. Ultimate Software (1,440 U.S. employees)
  10. Camden Property Trust (1,896 U.S. employees)

Any company at least five years old with more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible for the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list.
