Goodyear's new blimp has a name

Charlotte White received a surprise visit at her home in Akron, OH from the new Goodyear Blimp and Doug Grassian, Senior Manager of Airship Communications at Goodyear, announcing her name submission, "Wingfoot One" as the new name for the Goodyear Blimp.

After nearly 15,000 names were submitted in an on-line public and after a panel of Goodyear judges narrowed the submissions to 10 finalists, a final round of public voting has determined the name of the newest addition to the Goodyear fleet of airships. With almost 35 percent of the public vote, Wingfoot One received the most votes.

Wingfoot One was submitted by Akron resident Charlotte White who will receive a day of activities with Wingfoot One. The other nine finalists who submitted names are almost winners and will receive a set of Goodyear tires.

As a life long resident of Akron which is home to the Goodyear headquarters and whose stepfather retired from Goodyear, White knows Goodyear history. Goodyear's use of the Wingfoot trademark dates back to 1901 when the company first used it in advertising to promote the launch of its new Straight Side tire. Inspired by a statue of the Roman god Mercury in his home, Goodyear co-founder Frank Seiberling conceived of the idea of using the Wingfoot trade mark as a symbol of the company's global ambitions.

"The Wingfoot symbol has played a prominent role in defining the Goodyear brand for more than a century," said Paul Fitzhenry, senior vice president, global communications. "The name Wingfoot One makes an ideal connection between our trusted, global brand and our iconic airships."

To christen the new blimp, Goodyear has selected Robin Roberts, the award-winning co-anchor of ABC News' "Good Morning America," long-time ESPN sportscaster and successful author. She also has a long family history with Goodyear. Her great grandfather came to Akron in 1918 to work for Goodyear. The event will take place on Saturday, August 23, in Suffield, Ohio.

The christening ceremony will take place at the company's Wingfoot Lake hangar, near the company's global headquarters in Akron. Weather permitting, Roberts will be among the first passengers to fly on Wingfoot One. If you have ever dreamed of being close to a blimp, a limited number of free tickets to the christening event will be available for the general public. Details on ticket distribution will be available on Goodyear Blimp social media – @GoodyearBlimp on twitter and Goodyear Blimp on Facebook – in the coming weeks.
