While the world focuses on the pull out of U.S. troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, what more appropriate time to spotlight just one of the many nonprofit organizations focusing on helping many service men and women who will be transitioning back to civilian life.
The transition from military to civilian life can be extremely complex and overwhelming. The Goodwill has long since served the military by helping with career transitions, offering support to military families, finding housing, mental health care and other areas of much needed support.
Goodwill’s efforts toward the military are tangible. For example, this past summer the organization began an initiative entitled, Goodwill for America’s Heroes and Their Families. The purpose of this program was to help service members make the career transition back to civilian life. As of July 2011, Goodwill had hired 512 veterans and their family members. Additional services were provided for over 14,000 more.
In addition to the above initiatives, Goodwill has also released a white paper titled “From Deployment to Employment”. The paper focuses on the needs of the military services members, families and veterans.
In November, 2011 Goodwill released its official Public Policy Agenda focusing on four top areas:
Funding
Workforce Investment Act
Older American’s Act
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Like many other non profit organizations, Goodwill is doing their part to insure the success of our service men and women as they transition back to civilian life.
