Lexington has long been called the suburb without a city by those who felt that it lacked a thriving city center. To be sure, the Downtown area has seen its share of ups and downs. However, the food scene continues to stubbornly fight to stay alive and as a result the people who live and work downtown have more options than ever to satisfy those lunch time hunger pangs.
When I’m looking for a quick and affordable lunch downtown, I have a shortlist of good restaurants. By far one of my personal favorites for low key and quick takeout is Goodfellas Pizzeria, located on at 101 North Mill Street. The storefront of this tiny pizzeria suggests a New York pizza joint, complete with Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Amore” being piped into the street via speakers. You can watch them make each pizza in the window and they stretch the dough by tossing it in the air in near acrobatic feats.
The lunchtime fare is by the slice pizza in a variety of options from the mundane to downright strange (but tasty). The cost per slice is three dollars (with an extra 25 cents per additional topping), and each slice will easily satisfy one person (one slice is equal to two to three delivery chain slices). By far the best deal is the lunchtime special which includes a slice, a to-die-for bread stick, and a can of soda for five dollars (plus tax). I guarantee that even on your hungriest day, this meal will provide more than enough food. They do have pasta salad available if you would prefer it to the breadstick, but trust me, you want the breadstick with a big container of marinara dipping sauce.
At lunch the pizzas on display are mismatched quilts made up of several different kinds of pizza per slice. One pie might be made up of two slices of pepperoni, two slices of meatball banana pepper, two slices of mushroom, and two slices of tomato and spinach. Although you never know what your options will be, you can be assured that they will have a wide variety and the pizza will be hot and fresh out of the oven. During the height of lunchtime, the line can be out the door, but fear not, you can easily grab a slice to go and be back to your desk in 15 minutes.
Be aware, there is no indoor seating and the outdoor café tables that line the sidewalk fill up fast, so plan to take it back to your desk or pick a nice picnic spot on the way back to your office.
If you happen to be downtown at night, Goodfellas is open until 3:30 a.m. on the weekends and does serve a nice variety of beers. After hitting the bars or watching a basketball game, a slice of pie is the perfect way to end the night.
You can order a full pie to go, but remember that they will make it fresh and it will take time. Also, the whole pizza is quite large and you will need a nice big place to lay it flat in your car.
