Goodell says NFL open to possibility of using pot to treat concussions

Although the substance is currently banned by the League, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell may be open to allowing players to use pot for medicinal purposes, “if it can be proved that it helps treat concussion.

Goodell made the statement while announcing the winners of $300,000 grants to advance scientific studies regarding the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injuries sponsored in a joint partnership between the NFL and General Electric Co. known as the “Head Health Challenge.”

“I am not an expert, but we will obviously follow medicine, and if they determine marijuana could be a proper usage in any context, we will consider that,” he stated during a news conference at the League’s headquarters last week.

Among this year’s winning ideas were an electroencephalography device designed to record electrical activities of the brain that could be used during games; a brain imaging technique to identify broken connections in the brain after a traumatic injury; and a blood test meant to identify and measure severe brain injury rapidly.

“These studies hold promise of advancing brain science in important ways. The health and safety of our players is our top priority and this challenge extends that commitment to the general population as well. We hope the innovative approaches proposed by the 16 winners for 2014 will have a lasting impact on the treatment of head injuries,” he stated while standing alongside GE chairman Jeffrey Imelt.
