Good Vegan Bean Curd Szechuan Style in North Kansas City

If you happen to be in the vicinity of Liberty North High School—such as, for example, if you are chauffeuring a teenager to help out at a debate competition—you may want to stop in at Kam Sheng at 9774 North Ash Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64157, just north of Cookingham Drive (291 highway) and just west of I-35, for some good vegan bean curd Szechuan style with steamed white rice. Kam Sheng bills itself on its menu as “New York Style, best Chinese food, Hunan, Szechuan, Mandarin Cuisine.” As you can see in the accompanying photo, the portion is huge. What you cannot see is how good it tastes and how fast it arrived at the table from the kitchen. In addition to a lot of tofu, the dish also contained green bell peppers, mushrooms, water chestnuts, sweet green peas, and baby corn, all in a delightfully spicy sauce. For those of you going gluten free, however, please be forewarned that the sauce may not be gluten free. Otherwise, it is much healthier fast food than most other fast food available.

At least one vegan is grateful to the teenager in the car yesterday on the way to help out her friend at the debate competition, Aree Tomes, for taking the time and having the technical expertise to snap the accompanying photo and email it for this article.
