“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
Sadly, too many people, including God’s own children, put the cart before the horse in trying to add their own good things rather than first and foremost seeking the Father’s kingdom. When we try to gather our own good things, and increase ourselves, it requires a constant struggle of maintaining, a fervent frustration of hanging on, a battle with fear that what we have added will be taken away; and even worse, in some cases: a complete fall from grace because we did not allow God to develop the character in us needed to maintain a position, standing, or stuff.
But oh, when we seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness first, which is the wise way, then we are blessed beyond measure with the good things of the Father with no sorrow added! 1 Corinthians 14:40 testifies in the way of walking wisely “Let all things be done decently and in order.” Seeking things before seeking God’s kingdom is as off as the day is long. It is out of order; and anything out of order is doomed to disaster. God is a God of decency and order; therefore, He has established His kingdom as such. We too must be a people who conduct ourselves with decency and order.
“First” used here is proton (pr. pro-ton), meaning “firstly (in time, place, order, importance), chiefly” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines “chiefly” as most importantly.
The Greek word for “seek” as used in this verse is zeteo (pr. dzay-the-o) which means “to worship God.” Are you blown away by this, family? I know I am! I am so blown away, I had to jump up and down and give God a shout-out! Let that marinate for a moment, people of God! To seek the Father’s kingdom is to worship Him! My, my, my, my my! I am all tongue-tied right now! And grateful that my fingers are working to type this revelation :-).
We worship with our spirits what comes from our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 gives a sober warning to “Above everything else guard your heart, because from it flow the springs of life.” Luke 12:34 gives us perspective as it proclaims “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” And Matthew 6:19 counsels “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Why would you want to lay up treasures that are subject to moths, rusts, and robbers, my brother? Why give your heart to the treasure of worldly thinking, my sister? Why spend your days having to constantly worry about protecting those things which are going to be destroyed anyway?
Do you know that worship is a weapon of warfare against the enemy who comes to steal kill and destroy? (2 Chronicles 2:17-18, John 10:10). When we seek first the Kingdom of God, we are seeking the Father’s Basileia (pr. Bas-il-i-ah) which is royalty, a foundation of power. My God, my God! Romans 1:16 causes every demon to tremble as it thunders throughout the universe “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes!”
Do you want good and lasting things with no sorrow added, my brother? Do you cry out for the desires of your heart to be fulfilled, my sister? Then start by seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteous. Develop a heart of worship unto the Father; and as you minister to your King each day, He will add to it, every good and lasting thing that will be above and beyond anything that you could ask or imagine according to His Holy Spirit, Who is at work in every believer (Ephesians 3:20).
Father, thank You for Your Kingdom. Do a work in us, in our hearts, our minds, and our spirits, so that we become Kingdom-minded. Let us seek your Kingdom every second of every day. Help us to build Your Kingdom first and foremost. Put Your Kingdom within view of our spiritual eyes so that we fall in love with You, and are captivated by the beauty of Your Kingdom. In Jesus Name, we thank You that the world is now fading away as we focus on Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to develop a kingdom mindset. Make a habit of seeking God’s Kingdom and His Righteousness every single day. Choose to put God’s Kingdom first; and measure every decision, every action, every attitude against the Kingdom of the Father. And continue to fight the good fight of always building God’s kingdom and being about your Father’s business; for God, your Streets of Gold, has already given you the victory!
