So you've gotten into the addictingly fun world of salsa dancing-- great! However, when you're a beginner, it can be difficult to find good songs to dance to, since many songs have a very quick beat, making it difficult for beginners to follow along. This is even more true if you didn't grow up with salsa music, and don't even know where to begin.
Well have no fear! Here is a list of some great salsa songs that are slow enough for a beginner to follow along, while not being boring.
- "Yo No Se Mañana" by Luis Enrique - This is a super popular song that you will hear played at a lot of clubs, it has a nice slow start and romantic mood.
- "Agúzate" by Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz - A classic song with a beat that's slow enough for beginners to dance to, but with lots of instrumentation so you can play with the hits and musicality.
- "Boranda" by Sonora Ponceña - This is a great song from one of my favorite salsa bands, Sonora Ponceña. The beat is slow and easy going, in Sonora's signature minor key tonality, building up to an exciting crescendo.
- "Volare" by Son Boricua - This is a slightly faster paced song than the others, but is a Latin music cover of the Italian classic, and it's familiarity can be reassuring to those new to salsa music.
- "Todo Tiene Su FInal" by Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe - This is a medium paced classic that's a good song to learn, as many clubs use it as the last song of the evening (the song's title means "Everything has an end").
Those are a few great salsa songs that are good for beginner level dancers, and if you search on iTunes for the artists mentioned here, you'll be able to find many other great tracks as well.
If you are the owner of an iPhone or iPad, you may also want to check out the app called "The Amazing Slow Downer". The name of the app is a little silly, but it will allow you to slow down any song in your music library, so you can enjoy dancing to any song you like!
Finally, when dancing to faster music remember keep your core tight and your steps small and you'll be able to move a lot faster! Happy dancing!
