Did you ever have a day, or a year, or a decade, where it seemed that you were the cosmic whipping boy? Your spouse blamed you for the wetness of morning dew, your children exercised disobedience like a muscle man devotedly curls a dumbbell, your pets were irresistibly attracted to urinate in all the wrong places, your car clanked worse than your mother-in-law, and your spiritual experience resembled only the Cross.
Well, I have good news, nothing matters but God alone!
"Do not love the world or the things of the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world,
sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life,
is not from the Father but is from the world.
Yet the world and its enticement are passing away.
But whoever does the will of God remains forever." 1John 2:12-17
Unemployed, unhealthy, unwanted, seemingly unimportant and under-appreciated? Does everyone, to include 'family and friends' offer only criticism and condescension? Does the world seem like a cold used car lot? Good news! It's all a fart in the wind! It's all the devil's passing gas!
Just keep the faith, the hope, and a dose of charity--because, nothing matters but God alone!
"Give to the LORD, you families of nations,
give to the LORD glory and praise;
give to the LORD the glory due his name!" Psalm 96:7-10
Bob is big because he owns a beautiful boat. Betty is big because she thinks she's hot. Joe is large and in charge because he sells and earns. They all flex whatever they have, in an uncharitable way, toward the have not's and strugglers of the world. Meanness is the name of the game.
But they're all so small--because, nothing matters but God alone!
"When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
of the law of the Lord,
they returned to Galilee,
to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him." Luke 2:36-40
So, when you return home in rejection, anonymity, and desolation, take consolation in the good company you keep. For Jesus, Mary, and Joseph spent thirty years forgotten by this passing world. Yet Mary and Joseph, in Nazarene anonymity, knew that they had all that mattered in their dirt poor, obscure son.
For He is the God of Love, Love which makes the forgotten among us matter...and that is all that matters.
