Today is National Good Neighbor Day. If there is a neighbor that you don’t know very well, or even if you do, let’s celebrate the day by being a good neighbor. According to, natgoodneighborday.org, there are several things to do to become a good neighbor. One could plan a block party, run errands for someone, invite someone to dinner, pick up litter, take a plate of cookies to someone, help the elderly, or wash someone’s windows. In this stressful, turbulent economic time, let’s help by being a good neighbor. According to, natgoodneighborday.org, “It’s fun to be happy! And HAPPINESS IS CATCHY! Practice being a GOOD NEIGHBOR at home. Being patient, courteous and helpful, even when others are not, creates a happy atmosphere and a peaceful life.” That says a lot. If baking cookies is your thing, here is a recipe. Let’s celebrate National Good Neighbor Day!
Oatmeal Chocolate Chippers

¾ cup shortening
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup granulated white sugar
Cream together then add:
1 egg
¼ cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix well and sift in:
1 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking soda
3 cups oatmeal
6 oz. chocolate chips
Chill dough several hours for easier handling.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
Makes 3-4 dozen.
