As a starter last season, Milwaukee Brewers infielder Alex Gonzalez was off to a great start. He was batting .259 and gave the Brewers a good glove at shortstop.
After a season-ending ACL tear, Gonzalez now is happy to have found a team at all.
The Brewers and Gonzalez have agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million. The deal is still pending a physical and a spot for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster will need to be cleared up.
Gonzalez won't be a starter with the Brewers in 2013. Rather, he'll backup Jean Segura at shortstop.
Segura came over on the deal that sent pitcher Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels.
Signing Gonzalez gives the Brewers depth at shortstop and Gonzalez's solid glove in the infield.
The Brewers could use Gonzalez as little or as much as they need to. If Segura hits a cold streak at the plate, Gonzalez is a respectable .247 career hitter.
Gonzalez has motivation to show that at 36 he is still valuable to the team. His deal has incentives that could earn him another $1 million.
With the signing, the Brewers have the shortstop position nicely filled.
