Golf travel: Malone Golf Club

Ottawa-Gatineau area golfers in search of a cool deal on an autumn getaway to a popular golfing destination are about to save big-time in upstate New York.

Starting Sept. 19, www.GolfMalone.com will offer hot deal packages that had started at $215, and have now been sliced to $179. The packages include two days of unlimited golf, two nights lodging, power cart, guaranteed tee times and more.

The Malone Golf Club is one of several courses in the region and continues to be a favourite with players from the national capital region.

The club features 36 championship holes. They are divided into two outstanding courses that were designed by Robert Trent Jones.

The West Course is 6,592 yards long and plays to par 71. The East Course measures 6,545 yards and is a par 72. The East Course received a rating of four-and-a-half stars (the second highest possible rating from Golf Digest), while the West Course received an excellent rating of four stars.

The head professional is Derek Sprague. He was recently elected the PGA of America’s secretary.

While getting in their swings on the two terrific tracks, golfers can chow down and refresh themselves at very affordable prices. Most beers are $3, most drinks are less than $4 and most sandwiches are less than $9.

Directions:

  • Take Hwy. 417 east and exit at Rte. 138 (Exit 58). Take Rte. 138 south to Cornwall and cross the bridge into the U.S. After clearing U.S. Customs, take New York State Rte. 37 east to Malone, NY. At the intersection of New York State Rte. 11 turn east, proceed to the second red light and turn right. Take an immediate left onto Duane Street and proceed approximately five km to the Malone Golf and Country Club entrance. Driving time is about two-and-a-half hours.
