Golf is a sport mainly familiar to those that are fans of athletes like Tiger Woods as he has dominated the game and made it very exciting. Golf has also been proven to be just as active of a sport with autism as football or any other. Charlie Bristow, a 13-year old from Stillwater, Minnesota has used the game of golf to overcome struggles. He has supplemented autistic symptoms with a sense of peace and structure by playing. The young man has been taking up golf after receiving a lesson last July at Courage Center in Stillwater. He has developed a love for the game as he works with Applewood Hills golf professional Robin Nardini. Nardini has been helping Charlie along the way with his golf game for the past year. Charlie’s father has also seen strides in his son’s improvement and he feels he takes well to the game. Anyone that has autistic children knows that finding activities to spark their child’s interest can be one of the hardest challenges in raising their child. Charlie is definitely one kid who has found his spark in the game of golf.

Athletes Against Drugs non-profit organization

Golf has always been looked upon as the easiest sport known to be played. However, golf has a great deal of technique in handling the club to insure the ball gets into the hole. Golf programs have been held for those with and without disabilities for years. Some of the programs in Chicago, Athletes Against Drugs, have been around for over 25 years with featured guests such as author Stedman Graham.

Graham, who played golf professionally in Europe before completing his Master’s Degree in the U.S., has always attended the youth event to introduce the game of golf to kids. The non-profit organization selects inner-city youth at schools around Chicago to participate and even receive free Athletes Against Drugs t-shirts.

Golf programs such as Athletes Against Drugs, aids students in creating positive choices and substituting the negative ones. The same rules pose as no exception to those with neurological disorders. As obstacles arise, golf has a lesson of patience along with healthiness to assist kids with a focused activity instead of a high behavior environment.
