The following is a list of the prize money up for grabs for professional golfers at the 2014 edition of the Dubai Desert Classic, which is being held from Thursday, January 30, 2014 to Sunday, February 2, 2014. The Dubai Desert Classic has been held annually since 1989, making the 2014 edition the 25th Dubai Desert Classic.
The 2014 Dubai Desert Classic will be held at the Emirates Golf Club on the Majlis course. The tournament has been held at the Emirates Golf Club in 23 of its 25 years, with the other two Dubai Desert Classic editions played at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.
In honor of the 25th anniversary, all the previous winners of the Dubai Desert Classic are playing a special round of golf on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. The past champions are playing for a $600,000 prize, with the winner earning $300,000, second place gets $200,000, and third place earns $100,000.
All previous winners will be on hand except for Seve Ballesteros, who passed away in 2011. In a classy move, organizers of the Dubai Desert Classic invited Seve's son, Javier Ballesteros, to play to honor his father's memory (Seve Ballesteros won the Duabi Desert Classic in 1992).
The only two players to win multiple times at the Dubai Desert Classic are Ernie Els (three time winner, 1994, 2002, and 2005) and Tiger Woods (two time winner, 2006 and 2008). In the past, the organizers of the Duabi Desert Classic have paid out handsome appearance fees, including reportedly $3 million to Tiger Woods on more than one occasion.
All prize money shown for golfers at the 2014 Dubai Desert Classic has been converted from euros to dollars. While it is impossible to exactly predetermine the prize money due to the possibilities of ties, I have estimated the prize money for this year's tournament based upon actual payouts to last year's contestants.
Before I list the prize money, here is a little trivia question for golf fans (newbies will likely get this wrong). How much money did Tiger Woods earn at the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open last week at Torrey Pines? (answer at bottom)
Golf prize money up for grabs at 2014 Dubai Desert Classic
The total purse money up for grabs at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2014 is $2.5 million.
- Winner - $422,814
For winning the Dubai Desert Classic in 2013, Stephen Gallacher of Scotland earned $422,814. If that seems light compared to what PGA Tour winners get for winning tournaments it is, but keep in mind the total purse for the Dubai Desert Classic is $2.5 million, or less than half of what most PGA Tour events payout.
- Second Place - $281,173
For coming in second place in 2013, Richard Sterne of South Africa earned $281,173.
- Third Place - $171,394
Thorbjorn Olesen of Norway and Felipe Aguilar of Chile split $285,657 for tying for third place at the 2013 Dubai Desert Classic.
- Fourth Place - $114,263
Trivia answer - even though Tiger Woods missed the secondary cut at Torrey Pines last week, he still earned $10,919 at the Farmers Insurance Open. So the answer is not zero.
