In life, triumph can sometimes come out of a devastating tragedy.

The 8th Annual Luke Homan Memorial Golf Open will be held at The Legend of Brandybrook in Wales on Monday, June 16.

Such is the case with Luke Homan.

The former Brookfield Central and UW-La Crosse student-athlete may have lost his life, but his memory is very much alive with the annual golf tournament and foundation that bear his name.

Homan drowned in the Mississippi River in 2006.

Luke was the only child of Jerry, a former Al McGuire-era basketball star at Marquette University, and Patti Homan.

They dealt with their grief by honoring his memory with a golf outing (www.lukehomangolf.com).

Seven years later, the tourney has raised well over $500,000 raised thus far; distributing all the proceeds to a variety of charities in Wisconsin.

"Patti and I never thought in our wildest dreams that this tourney would still be going on and with such tremendous success," Jerry writes on the event website.

"But, we know it is because of all of you and we don't doubt that for a second," he added.

Partnering with the folks at Wirtz Beverage Wisconsin and their Blackhawks Children Charities organization, kids with special needs, kids with prosthetics and kids in the inner city are among those helped thus far.

The proceeds will benefit the Hartland Food Bank and the USO of Wisconsin.

This year's event will take place on Monday, June 16, at The Legend of Brandybrook in Wales (www.thelegendclubs.com) located at 1 Legend Way (262-968-9717).

Radio personality Steve (The Homer) True of 540 ESPN in Milwaukee (www.espnwisconsin.com) will emcee the dinner and oral auction following the two-session event.

The deadline for registering is Friday, June 6. Check the event website for all pertinent information.

It seems fitting that at The Legend, the special guest is legendary former Wisconsin and current star Cleveland Browns offensive lineman, Joe Thomas.

Thomas was a friend and teammate of Luke Brookfield Central.
