Golf Instruction - Tiger Woods fairway bunker shot video

The fairway bunker shot has been called the hardest shot in golf. In order to improve with this shot, first learn the basic fundamentals, and then practice as much as possible. Here are the most important tips to remember for the fairway bunker shot:

  • First, depending on the location of the ball in the bunker, choose a club with enough loft to get over the lip. Of course, objective number one should be getting the ball out of the bunker.
  • Take more club than normal. For instance, if you normally hit your 7 iron from 140 yards away when you're in the fairway, take a 6 iron if you're 140 yards away in the fairway bunker.
  • Choke down with your grip. In other words, grip the club closer to the shaft.
  • Slightly dig your feet into the sand.
  • Line the ball approximately in the middle of your stance.
  • Take normal stance, with feet approximately shoulder width apart.
  • Take your normal swing, but focus on keeping your lower body quiet (or still) on the back swing.
  • The most important aspect of the shot is picking the ball cleanly out of the sand. The ball should be struck first and then the club should slightly brush the sand.

The fairway bunker shot is probably practiced less than any other shot by most golfers. In order to get consistent, this shot requires a lot of practice, time, and effort. Find a golf facility near you that has a practice fairway bunker, and get to work. Oak Marr golf course, located in Oakton, Virginia has an excellent practice fairway bunker.
