The first-ever event will be held on the Varadero Golf Club, which is right next door to the resort.
“We are inviting golfers from around the world to join us for our anniversary during this new event from May 7-10,” said Reynaldo Leon Diaz, sales manager for Melia Las America. “In the past, our tournaments have attracted players from Canada, Argentina, Chile, Dominican Republic, France, Nigeria, Germany, Spain, Italy and Cuba.”
The tournament fee is 150 convertible-Cuban-pesos per person. It includes a welcome gift pack, all green fees for before, during and after the tournament, golf cart rental for all rounds, participation in the longest drive contest, snacks during the two days of official tournament play and the awards dinner.
“We’ll present the winning players in each flight with a free one week stay for two at Melia Las Americas. Players finishing second in each category and the individual contests will receive sponsor prizes,” said Diaz. “We place players of equal playing ability together and the tournament will be a great opportunity for the golfers to get in some friendly competition.”
The tournament is for amateur golfers with an official certified handicap of 26 for the men and 36 for the women. The format is stroke play for the two mandatory competition rounds and one optional practice round.
