Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Wisconsin offered a $9.11 deal for golfers to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy this week.
Now the course is considering closing down on September 11 due to all of the negative response.
The ad, printed in Wisconsin State Journal, quickly went viral this week, with many furious over the Verona, Wis. golf course's lack of tact.
The ad offers golfers "9 holes with cart for only $9.11 per person or 18 holes with cart for only $19.11!"
Tumbletown stated on the coupon that the offer is valid on "9/11/13 Only!" just in case anyone was hoping to score this morbid discount on another day.
The tasteless offer is valid on a day that Americans will once again relive the tragic day in history when thousands of innocent people were murdered in the terrorist attacks.
As people across the nation pause to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Tumbledown Trails Golf Course is trying to lure golfers in for a cheap day on the links.
At first, the company offered up their reason for the 9-11 deal on their Facebook page after hundreds of negative comments were left about the ad.
“We apologize to everyone that we have upset or feels we have disrespected in anyway. By no means did we mean to do this.”
The offer was pulled, but the course stated that it would be honored by golfers who took advantage of it and for any golfer who booked a tee time at the normal rate on September 11, the company planned to "donate the difference" to the 9/11 Memorial.
On September 10, Tumbledown posted an update on their Facebook page, stating that they may close on September 11:
"Please stay tuned to see if we will be open on Weds 9/11. We are now worried about what people will do/say to our staff & do not want anything to happen or get out of control. Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused anyone."
If they do stay open, should they donate the difference or donate all of their proceeds from this crass promotion to the 9/11 memorial?
