Goldgate part one: Glenn Beck and Gretchen Carlson have something in common at Fox News

Glenn Beck has recently come under fire for a potential conflict of interest over gold.  Fox News has so far stood by Beck and allowed him to still promote gold on his show while being sponsored by companies like Goldline International.

While Beck makes it clear that he is sponsored by Goldline on his radio show this fact is not so obvious on his television show where he at times warns his audience of impending ecnomic doom while telling them to run to gold for safety.  The worry is that many who follow him only on television are being essentially sold a product during his commentary without knowing of the personal financial interest he has wih gold-buying companies like Goldline.

It has recently been revealed that Beck is not alone in coming under fire for a potential conflict of interest.  As Kevin Allocca of TVNEWSER reports Gretchen Carlson, host of Fox & Friends, recently gave a very friendly interview to Derek Jeter providing him with significant free promotion.  During the interview Carlson never revealed that her husband, Casey Close, just happens to be Jeter agent.  Allocca provides quotes from the interview including Carlson calling Jeter "the hottest athlete right now in the world."  Later Carlson asks the probing question "Twenty-four seven the microscope is on you, how difficult is it to live your life so perfectly?"

Below are the two clips of the two Fox News personalities currently being accused of a conflict of interest.  First is Carlson interview with Jeter followed by Beck promoting gold on his show back in October.

ooooo you're so good at tracking how Fox News is duping the people. What about the freaking Obama administration and government in general. That includes Democrats and Republicans alike. What about ClimateGate. Don't you have anything better to do? What a waste of polluting hot air.

So you're saying I shouldn't buy anything from Goldline?

Goldline also supports leftist bloggers like Witt by paying this website to host his mindless dreck.Buy, buy, buy!

    Ryan,

Honestly! Glenn Beck thinks we should all have some gold on hand just in case....so what?

Does he not have a right to say it, because he also has Goldline International as a sponsor?

I suppose you think if a person has a really positive attitude about a certain product, he should 'decline' to have a company who sells 'that product' be a sponsor??

I don't get this one at all! I'll refer back to my last post. (Some whining liberals will criticize an ice cream sandwich if it will make people believe something that is not so.)

Beck is just another fake news huckster? wow. That's extremely surprising.

In that clip, I never heard Beck suggest that we buy gold from any one company or even mentioned where he happens to buy gold. He spent more time talking about real estate than gold.

I never buy gold from the high mark-up companies like Goldline and I would hope that anyone with a free $1100 (price/ounce) to move around does their due diligence to find the best price.

If I were in Becks situation I don't think I'd feel conflicted about advertising for them on radio and speaking in general about gold on TV. In the end, this is the old argument from the world of financial advice; which is worse, advising a client to buy something you don't own or something you do own? In the first case, why should they own if if you won't? In the second case, won't the price of your asset increase if there is more interest in it? If beck ignored the issue of the falling dollar he'd be a bad commentator on the economy. He raises the issue and he has a conflicted of interest? What Nonsense!

Fiat money is out of control due to terrible fiscal policy. when the ship sinks, i'm sure you will not be so concerned about beck and his sponsors. do your homework people we are facing either huge inflation, huge taxes or maybe both.

What did you really expect from fox news? I love the latest one where Jon Stewart owns Gretchen Carlson by suggesting she dumbs herself down to meet the intellect of her audience.
