Does Al Golden know something the rest of us don’t? I’m not talking about the NCAA investigation; I’m referring to the carnal knowledge he possesses about his team. It seems to me that Coach Golden believes this year’s Hurricanes have a chance to not only win the ACC, but make some major noise on the national stage. You may be asking yourself; "where is this coming from"? Let’s take a look at the intelligence I’ve used to come to this conclusion.
First, one of the biggest weaknesses—if not the biggest—coming into this season for the Hurricanes is supposed to be the defensive line. What did Al Golden do to address this? Of course he went out and recruited players to add depth to players that are already on the roster, but he also added 3 transfers to that group. Those players; David Gilbert, Ufomba Kamalu, and Justin Renfrow, are all upperclassmen and come with game experience under their belt. Teams that are trying to build a program for future success don’t usually add junior and senior transfers. Only teams that believe they can compete right now do that.
Second, for the first time since Coach Golden arrived in Miami there is competition and depth at every position on the field. Every week since camp started this August, the Hurricane depth chart has had changes on it. The trend has continued with the most recent depth chart going into the FAU game http://bit.ly/12EdNym .This means we are no longer looking at a team that is desperate to simply field a full squad of capable scholarship players, but one that is filled with battle tested players and young talent that will push the entire program to a higher level.
Finally, for the first time since Ken Dorsey Miami has a quarterback and an offense, that will be among the nation’s best this season. I know the old saying it is that defense wins championships, but in today’s high scoring college football landscape, you have to be able to put points on the board in order to win. In Stephen Morris the Canes have a signal caller with the ability and experience to make big plays in crucial moments. Add to the mix sophomore sensation Duke Johnson, a wide receiver corps filled with talent, and an offensive line that could be among the country’s best, and you’ve got a recipe for a dynamic offensive attack.
In the end, all of this is just speculation and conjecture on my part. However, it would not surprise me if the Canes finished 10-2 and won the ACC this season. But, if my hunch is correct, I think Coach Golden has much loftier goals than that!
