Colonial Williamsburg’s famed Golden Horseshoe Golf Club will host its 14th Millennium Golf Classic at its great Gold and Green Courses, Jan. 4 – 5, 2014.
The Gold Course, built by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., opened in 1963 and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The layout’s four par-3 holes – the 3rd, 7th, 12th and 16th – are among the best in golf and it’s likely the Millennium Golf Classic will be decided on one of those holes. The Green Course, designed in 1998 by Jones’ son Rees, has played host to several national championships.
"I think that you’ve got the combination for the best combined par threes that you’ll find anywhere in the nation," Rees Jones said the Gold Course on a recent visit to Colonial Williamsburg. "I think that he probably routed those par threes first, I think he found them first. He would put X’s all over the map and marked where the green locations should be, the tee locations, and then I bet you he found – I’m sure he found – the 16th hole first. That wasn’t the first island green (in the world), but it certainly catapulted the idea of the island green, not just par 3s, into the forefront in years to come."
The Golf Classic began with the millennium and remains a popular annual tradition at the renowned Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. The 36-hole tournament features teams of two amateur golfers. Saturday's format will be captain's choice; Sunday's will be four-ball (two person, best ball).
The entry fee of $420 per two-person team includes one practice round, two tournament rounds, golf cart during tournament rounds, practice balls prior to tournament rounds, tee gift, continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, Saturday evening buffet dinner, and awards presentation.
Golfers may request entry forms at email@example.com or by calling 1-800-648-6653 or (757) 220-7696. Registration ends Dec. 31, 2013.
