“In 1986, I won an audition for a movie called “Street Smart.”  I played a pimp.  Movie didn’t do all that well, but I got a nomination for it.  That would’ve been the catalyst for me.  That was the big boost [to my career].”

Is it really true that as an actor, you feel you’ve never worked a day in your life?:

“As an actor, no.  Acting…I’ve never considered it working.  Rehearsing?  Kinda.”

Octavia Spencer talked about how “The Help” can help teach America about discrimination.  Can you talk about how Hollywood films can help teach new generations of film goers about discrimination and the Civil Rights movement?

“I can talk about it, but I wouldn’t say anything interesting. “

“When I was growing up, one of the more effective avenues for learning about American history was movies.  Movies were so impacting.  And I would like to think, because of the trajectory of my career that I might have had a little input into some of America’s history and some of the changes that have taken place in our industry here in Hollywood.”
