Golden Globes to air January 13 on NBC in San Francisco

The 70th Golden Globe Awards ceremony will air 5 p.m. PST in San Francisco Jan. 13 on NBC. The awards in 25 categories are nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a nonprofit with roots going back to the beginning of World War II when foreign press were stationed in Los Angeles and were eager to promote quality entertainment. The following year HPFA formed and took as its motto “Unity Without Discrimination of Religion or Race.” The mission statement was later broadened to "establish favorable relations and cultural ties between foreign countries and the United States of America by the dissemination of information concerning the American culture and traditions as depicted in motion pictures and television through news media in various foreign countries".

The Golden Globes have been regarded as a preliminary indication of the recipients of Academy Awards on Feb. 24.

Noteworthy in this year's nominations is the inclusion of Kathryn Bigelow in the best director category for a motion picture for "Zero Dark Thirty", shockingly omitted from the Academy Awards nominations. While it is true that in this category directors nominate directors, the implications of the Academy decision are being discussed due to the sensitive subject matter of the film on the tracking and capture of Usama Bin Laden in May 2011.

Biopics on controversial aspects of the late Alfred Hitchock include Helen Mirren playing Hitchcock's wife Alma Reville nominated for best actress in a motion picture in "Hitchcock"and Sienna Miller playing Tippi Hedren, nominated for best actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television in "The Girl".

Toby Jones who plays Hitchcock in "The Girl" is nominated for best actor in the same category, whereas Anthony Hopkins was passed over for "Hitchcock".

Here are the 2013 Golden Globe nominations:
