The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards were held this year at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California – honoring achievements in television and film from the past year. Held on January 12th, the awards were hosted for the 2nd time by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. There were a lot of glamorous gowns that went down the red carpet this year, and of course some missteps as well.
As usual, there were a lot of black, white, or silver gowns chosen for the night. Some of the stand-outs in this genre were Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Uma Thurman, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, and Kate Mara. Cate Blanchett looked so beautiful and romantic in an all-over black lace dress with nude lining underneath – which also had an open back that ended very low. Kate Beckinsale stunned in silver sequins with a sweetheart neckline and trumpet skirt. Uma Thurman looked lovely in fitted black with some shimmer. Jenna Dewan-Tatum garnered attention in a white gown with a long train and elegant black embroidery. Kate Mara chose a silver gown with a plunging v-neck that was pretty – although her hair and make-up styling was rather blah.
Some of the gowns that could make you go “huh?” were worn by Edie Falco, Paula Patton, Julia Roberts, and Hayden Panettiere. Edie Falco looked as though she wasn’t ready to let go of Christmas; wearing a red silk blob of a dress with a huge bow at the neck. Paula Patton chose a long-sleeved white gown that was overpowered by a gigantic ruffle that went all the way down the left side of the dress. Julia Roberts said her kids picked her gown for the night, which was an unfortunate plain black dress with silver belt and white half-sleeve tuxedo skirt attached to the top part of the bodice. Hayden Panettiere’s dress was a black and white colorblocked design; rather boring – and her hair was simply slicked back and sprayed stiff for an unflattering look overall.
The Golden Globes are nicknamed the “biggest party of the year;” so it’s always fun to see what the stars of television and film wear for the night. Now enjoy the slideshow that features all the gowns discussed in this article as well as several others!
