Golden Globes 2011 set color & style trends for the year ahead

As the celebs made their way down this year’s Golden Globe Red Carpet  we saw  the hottest new trends in color, style, and shape literally being made before our very eyes!

Indeed, from stars of the big screen to the little screen, from the worlds of music, movie and  television arts and sciences, there was certainly no shortage of brand new  glam looks  from this year’s presenters, nominees and winners alike – with many taking their cue from that old school Hollywood heyday when stars looked like, well stars!

So, what were the trends likely to  influence the way we will be dressing in the months to come?   Here’s what we saw as the three major fashion trends from the very first award show of 2011 - The  Golden Globes.

Trend # 1 : Ruffles!  This age-old feminine touch was everywhere the eye could see – with ruffles on gowns from top to bottom –and sometimes in between. While  some  were a bit more traditional – like the ruffled gowns worn by Amy Adams, Kaley Cuoco ,  Lea Michelle  and Jennifer Lawrence ( who paired ruffles with the French corset look for a real Wow) there were also those who added a bit more edgy look and feel to their ruffles - like Julie Bowens  pale grey  grown with ruffles that had a decidedly “torn parchment” appeal.

As such we predict that ruffles will dominate the formal and cocktail party dress  scene throughout spring and summer 2011.

Trend # 2 : Black is the new black!    Rarely do we ever see black as a major Red Carpet color.  But 2011 seemed the year of exception,  with more black dresses – many of them with ruffled trims – making their fashion  presence known.

It began with Giuliana Rancic  and Kelly Osborn, the hosts of   E Entertainment who greeted their guests in gorgeous black gowns. The trend continued with Melissa Leo,  Eva Longoria,  Olivia Wilde Piper Perabo, Jennifer Lawrence Annette Benning,  Julia Stiles, Julianne Hough,   Halle BerryJama Mays, Jessalyn Gilsig,  Christian Aguilara  , Jane Fonda, and Rita Wilson – to name a few!

Based on what we saw tonight, expect  that “little black party dress “  to make a huge comeback this year, as the go-to outfit for everything from cocktail parties  and weddings to formal balls and  black tie events!

But black wasn’t just limited to dresses this year.  We also saw more black earrings this year than ever!  Among the most fashionable examples Nicole Kidman – who pair her stunning black chandeliers to pop the style of a white chiffon gown in a most unusual way -  while  Jennifer Lawrence donned gorgeus, long black drop dangle earrings. And come back tomorrow for our report on the gems, jewels and accessory trends at this years show.

Trend # 3: Green is the new black!  Who wasn’t in black was definitely in green – and this year all shades of green stole the red from the Red Carpet .  Stunning in a  green Vera Wang was   Mila Kunis,  nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "Black Swan".;   Angelina Jolie looked so good it almost took your breath away  in a green beaded Versace while   Elizabeth Moss  nominated for "Mad Men" donned  a green Donna Karan.  Catherine Zeta-Jones  who was not a presenter or a nominee stole the show in a stunning, embossed silk deep green gown.
