Golden Flashes announce 2010 Football signing class

Kent State head football coach Doug Martin unveiled the Golden Flashes 2010 recruiting class on Wednesday (2/3) at the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio as KSU looks to compete for the Mid-American Conference title this fall. The Golden Flashes’ 2010 recruiting class was rated as the third-best class in the conference.

Martin and his staff signed 20 first-year players, including six who are already enrolled at Kent State. 16 of the 20 enrollees are primarily defensive stalwarts, including seven defensive linemen and/or defensive ends, four linebackers and five defensive backs. Offensively, the Flashes welcome a quarterback, a running back and a pair of offensive linemen.

“This year our focus was across the board on defense and on the offensive line,” said Martin. “We really like this group and think there are some that can help us right away.”

One of the recruits who Martin spotlighted was quarterback Cedric McCloud (Jacksonville, Fla./William M. Raines/Central Carolina Sports Academy (N.C.) who is already enrolled in classes. “I haven’t seen a guy throw a ball like this since I coached David Garrard (currently an All-Pro signal-caller with the Jacksonville Jaguars) back at East Carolina,” said Martin. “He’s got a tremendous arm.”

Eight of the Flashes’ newcomers are from Ohio. The remaining 12 hail from seven states including: Georgia (3), Pennsylvania (3), North Carolina (2), Florida (1), Maryland (1), New York (1) and Virginia (1).

Kent State, who finished the 2009 season with a 5-7 record which included a 4-4 mark in the MAC, will have to replace seven total starters including three on offense and four on the defensive side of the ball.
