Golden Bears advance to CIS men's hockey championship

According to the University of Calgary Dinos website, the University of Alberta Golden Bears have advanced to the 2014 University Cup in Saskatoon with a 2-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos in men's hockey Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

Forward Torrie Dyck of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan scored the game winning goal for Alberta with 52 seconds left in the second period from captain Sean Ringrose and defenseman Ian Barteaux. The University of Alberta beat the University of Calgary 2-0 in the best-out-of-three Canada West championship series.

The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead early in the first period as Jamie Crooks scored at 1:34 from Brett Ferguson. The Dinos then tied the score at 2:20 of the second period when Dylan Walchuk scored with the man advantage from Cory Pritz and Spencer Edwards.

The Dinos played much better on Saturday than they did on Friday when they lost 8-1, but it was not enough. Golden Bears goaltender Luke Siemens made 15 saves.

The Golden Bears will be looking for their 14th University Cup championship. Their last victory came in 2008 in Moncton, New Brunswick when they beat the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 3-2 in the championship final.
