Gold and diamonds are not just adorning your body these days, they are also being made for your eyes. Gold and diamond encrusted contact lenses are an elaborate, expensive and new way to bejewel your eyes. Custom made gold plated lenses featuring eighteen glittering diamonds are the latest trend in eyewear.
The blinged out eyewear is a new custom jewelry line created by optomologist Chandrasekhar Chawn of the Indian research center Shekhar Eye research. The doctor professes that the eyewear is very safe to wear and poses no risk of damaging the cornea despite the negative media attention it received. Chandra Boston scleralnlenses are used to create the bejeweled lenses. This particular brand of contact lens is generally used to treat eye illness. The lenses weigh about five grams in total and sit between 6 mm and 9 mm away from the cornea. The jewelry part of the lens does not touch the cornea at all.
The inspiration behind the creation was Dr. Chandrasekhar Chawn's wife who had diamonds put into her teeth. He hopes that the product will be used by Bollywood actors to create a new and exciting look. The cost of such lavish eye jewelry is fifteen thousand dollars a pair. All of the proceeds will benefit people suffering from Stevens Johnson syndrome which is a rare eye disease that affects tear glands and leads to a loss of vision. A limited edition of four thousand pairs will be created and sold exclusively through Shekhar eye research.
