Fans of the romantic comedy have found it hard to find a decent one at the theaters of late. Where are the ingénues that we could always count on? In the 1980's and 1990's Meg Ryan was our girl with When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and the grammatically incorrect You've Got Mail. Fans of even earlier films will also remember the treasure trove of films by Doris Day, including Pillow Talk and That Touch of Mink. But perhaps it’s more than finding a young actress that has witty charm and adorable looks. We need an updated version of the romantic comedy that continues to deliver romance, but give us characters that we can believe really live among us.

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long more than quench our desires in their new film Going the Distance. This is a romantic comedy of an updated world. Drew and Justin portray young, single characters that are finding it difficult to find work in a downturned economy and maintain a personal relationship in the meanwhile. Along for the ride to provide comic relief is Justin’s ever embarrassing roommate Dan (played by Charlie Day) and Christina Applegate as Drew’s germ phobic, overprotective sister.

This is a grown-up film with more sex scenes than the usual romantic comedy and also more personal touches of learning to love across a great distance. The film gracefully portrays the characters that are not willing to throw all personal ambitions aside just the for the sake of creating the last scene of most romantic comedies.

This is not Drew’s first time out of ingénue and this film is a welcomed addition to her other films. The problem: We want to see more of you Drew! Justin Long is very convincing as the 21st century boyfriend. He is boyish, sometimes self-absorbed, but also in love. This is an enjoyable film that definitely ups the ante for future romantic films. Notice also must be given to Geoff LaTulippe for a great script.

Going The Distance is rated R for sexual content and has a run time of 1 hrs. and 42 minutes
