Going natural can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. Before, the most common way for many black women who wanted to go from relaxed (chemically treated) hair to natural hair was to shave their heads or by doing the big chop (BC). Those options can give you a fresh start but for some the thought of cutting off lengthy tresses is a deterrent. If you are a member of this group who would like to maintain your length while going natural, there is hope.
Alternative options to achieve your natural hair goals include but are not limited to braids, weaves, twist, or a straw set. Not only are most of these options low maintenance, but they can offer you versatility and style.
Braids
Now and days, braids come in many styles. Instead of the traditional three strand braid try adding some flare with a micro style braiding or invisible braids, or Ghana corn rows. Various braided patterns and types can give you an edgy earthy look.
Kinky twists
Kinky twist with added hair or flat two-strand twisting your own hair can add texture but by simply dipping the ends of the hair in hot water and setting with rolling rods creates a bountiful curly polished look.
Straw set
The straw set will lend a curly natural looking coif that can help get you over the hurdle while you grow your hair out. To achieve this look you will need drinking straws, hair pins, setting lotion, end papers and a dryer. This style looks fabulous, feels natural and can typically last about 2 weeks or longer.
Quick weaves
Sew-ins or Quick Weaves can add length, volume, texture and style. The longer lasting weaves of the two would be the sew-in because the wefts are sewn onto your corn rowed hair. Durability depends on the quality and care of the weave you choose. Quick weaves usually requires the use of bonding glue but can offer as much versatility as a sew-in. Additionally, a Latch-hook weave, commonly known as the crochet weave, is a strand by strand extension weaving that allows you to create your very own sultry, sexy style choices by crocheting the hair onto your own cornrows.
Whichever style you choose to wear all of these options can assist in the process of growing out relaxed hair. However, it is equally important to note that even though these styles are alternatives to the BC you will still need to gradually cut off the relaxed hair as your natural hair grows.
