Many thanks to faithful reader, Stephen, for this and many other great topic ideas for this column. If you've caught wind of the next big thing, or just something you think is cool, especially if it's in or around San Francisco, drop me an email or leave a comment and I'll get on as soon as possible. Thanks!

Stephen emailed recently inquiring about military surplus jackets. This brought back a flood of memories from 20 or so years ago. My hometown had an amazing Army/Navy store which meant almost unimpeded access to military clothing from all over the world.

Military gear is made in abundance and it's made to last. Savvy entrepreneurs and retailers caught onto this ages ago and have developed an entire industry around it. Despite rumors of San Francisco being all peace, love and granola, it sure does have a lot of places to buy military surplus.

Whether you are looking for new surplus, vintage, or something from a far away land, you won't have to look too far. Right in the heart of downtown San Francisco is Kaplan's Surplus and Sporting Goods at 1055 Market Street. This store has everything from the basic 4 pocket jacket to German Polizei jumpsuits. The Outer Mission has Acme Surplus (5159 Mission Street) which also has a widely varied selection of fatigues, pea coats and boots.

It's not so much that military surplus is "back," it's more like it never went away. The fact that it is getting attention by men with a keen eye for fashion is just a testament to its classic, rugged, handsomeness and well honed utility. The next time you're in the mood for a shopping safari look in the direction of your nearest Army/Navy store.

I am jealous. In NYC, The army/Navy stores no longer carry used items. Just new ones that may or maynot be authentic. Until I read your article, I simply thought all the surpluses are gone!
