Godzilla stomps into theaters this weekend

It's an exciting weekend for those of us who grew up watching giant monster movies imported from Japan. I was one of those kids and my dad and I would watch them on weekends. Godzilla was always the true king of the monsters. I even had a Godzilla action figure and watched his cartoon show with his nephew (???) Godzookie. I was crushed with the American version that came out in the 90s, but I have been looking forward, with much anticipation, the version that hits theaters this weekend.

Oh, and Jon Hamm has a Disney sports movie out this weekend, too.

Here are the movies opening May 16, 2014:

Godzilla - Aaron Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen. A mysterious accident at a nuclear power plant makes one man go on a quest to find out what really happened. It turns out that giant monsters from the below the earth were responsible. Now, those monsters, known as MUTOs, are out and wreaking havoc on major cities. There's only one creature that can stop them, one terrible creature that many thought had been killed in the 50s - Godzilla. The giant fire-breathing (technically "atomic breath" but why quibble) lizard is back and the reviews for this one say it erases any memory of the prior version that came out in the 90s. Featuring a strong human story matched with spectacular monster-fighting scenes this is a Godzilla that respects the history of the movies that everyone fell in love with. Rated PG-13.

Million Dollar Arm - Jon Hamm, Alan Arkin, Aasif Mandvi. A sports agent has hit a very dry spot. Unable to find the next great baseball prospect, he comes up with a crazy idea. Why not find the next big pitching prospect among the cricket leagues in India. The agent travels to India and then returns to the U.S. with several young prospects, all of whom now have a dream of becoming a baseball star in America. This is reported based on a true story, but critics are saying that this one is maudlin, cliched and unoriginal. If you have seen one Disney sports movie, you have already seen this one. Rated PG.
