‘Godzilla’ returned to theaters over the weekend and crushed the competition, according to industry figures reported by film tracking site Box Office Mojo on Monday.
The mighty monster movie grossed $93.1 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, which more than doubled the opening weekend take of 1998’s ‘Godzilla.’
Last weekend’s No. 1 film, R-rated comedy ‘Neighbors’ starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, slipped to No. 2 in its second weekend, earning $25 million for a total of $90.5 million since opening May 9.
Superhero sequel ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ fell one spot to No. 3 in its third weekend, earning $16.8 million for a total of $172.1 million since opening May 2.
Biographical sports drama ‘Million Dollar Arm’ starring Jon Hamm opened at No. 4 with $10.5 million.
Female revenge comedy ‘The Other Woman’ starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton dropped two spots to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $6.3 million for a total of $71.6 million since opening April 25.
