'Godzilla' rules weekend box office; 'X-Men,' 'Blended' open Friday

‘Godzilla’ returned to theaters over the weekend and crushed the competition, according to industry figures reported by film tracking site Box Office Mojo on Monday.

The mighty monster movie grossed $93.1 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, which more than doubled the opening weekend take of 1998’s ‘Godzilla.’

Last weekend’s No. 1 film, R-rated comedy ‘Neighbors’ starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, slipped to No. 2 in its second weekend, earning $25 million for a total of $90.5 million since opening May 9.

Superhero sequel ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ fell one spot to No. 3 in its third weekend, earning $16.8 million for a total of $172.1 million since opening May 2.

Biographical sports drama Million Dollar Arm starring Jon Hamm opened at No. 4 with $10.5 million.

Female revenge comedy ‘The Other Woman’ starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton dropped two spots to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $6.3 million for a total of $71.6 million since opening April 25.

  • ‘Blended’ starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is a comedy about a man and woman, each with children of their own, who get off to a rocky start but develop a mutual attraction while stuck together at a resort for families. Rated PG-13. Watch the official trailer here.
