And the flavor of the month is...Gareth Edwards. Deadline Hollywood reports that Lucasfilm owner Disney has signed the “Godzilla” director to direct a standalone, 3D “Star Wars” spin-off film. The mouse has already slated the still-untitled project for a December 16, 2016 release date.

Ironically, the “Star Wars” spin-off’s only competition for that weekend appears to be 20th Century Fox’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks” fourquel. 20th Century Fox released the original “Star Wars” back in the summer of 1977.

Edwards’ star is clearly on the rise. His “Godzilla” reboot scared up $93 million domestically its opening weekend, and has already passed the $216 million mark worldwide. It may put a small crimp in Warner Bros.’ plans for a “Godzilla” reboot sequel, as Edwards’ dance card fills up.
