'Godzilla' finds an Oscar winning actress

The “Godzilla” reboot just picked up a classy actress.

Variety reported yesterday that Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”) is in final negotiations to join the monster mayhem.

She would be joining Aaron Johnson (“Kick-Ass”) and Elizabeth Olsen (the upcoming “Old Boy”) in a movie that is said to center on a soldier, and involve at least two giant monsters in addition to the titular character.

Gareth Edwards (“Monsters”) is directing from a script by the excellent Frank Darabont (AMC’s “The Walking Dead”).

Not much is known about any of the characters, but with all the talent they are getting involved it sounds like this could finally be a serious monster movie (I thank Matt Reeves’ “Cloverfield” for making studios take this genre seriously).

The release date for “Godzilla” is currently set for May 16th, 2014.
