Every year Fredericksburg, Virginia hosts a Religious Freedom parade in honor of Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. This year, the newly formed Fredericksburg Coalition of Reason took part in the parade alongside religious groups like the Knights of Columbus.
Last week, the Fredericksburg Coalition of Reason (FredericksburgCoR) also put up a billboard advertising their group on the west side of I-95, three miles north of Route 17. The billboard features a blue sky and clouds and says, “Don't believe in God? You are not alone."
Matthew Jordan, the spokesperson for the group states:
"We hope people will realize that we are a regular part of the community.” He also stated, “Being visible is important to us, because, in our society, atheists and agnostics often don’t know many people like themselves. Moreover, if traditionally religious people can be open about their views, why can’t we be open about ours?”
The new coalition is made up of five atheist groups in the area. To find out more about these groups, check out the FredericksburgCoR website. Also, find out if there is a coalition of reason near you at UnitedCoR.org.
