God's Will and Greasy Grace

See also

I'm going to begin a series of editorials, starting with this one, dealing with the topic of God's will. The Bible says that God wants all men to come unto Him and that none perish. Thus the topic of salvation is usually front and center whenever Christianity is discussed. How do you crash the party of eternal life in Heaven? Or more politely said, how do you get invited to the party?

I don't have time to delve into all possible answers to this real life puzzle, but let's mention that believing that Jesus is the son of God is the starting point. That viewpoint is a key tenant of Christianity and is as close to a consensus as you'll find among human belief. One school of thought is that believing in Jesus as the savior and having faith that He will save us is the ticket. Some will attach an external experience known as being born again in that acceptance of Jesus. But Jesus also spoke about obedience and the commandments. Where do those two concepts dovetail or don't they?

I'm certainly not prophetic in nature, but I will go out on a limb here and make a prediction on what I see in the world and in the Bible. Scripture says that in the last days, there will be a falling away from truth. False teachers will abound and they will sway people unto fables, a task that won't be hard because people will have itching ears and want to hear things that will bring them pleasure. I truly believe we are in the last days, and that the process of luring men away from God's bedrock truth onto things they want to believe in is in full process. I also predict a great upheaval between two factions of Christianity. That is nothing new, but I think the chasm between these two groups will be larger than any other division in history.

There are people now walking the earth proclaiming that God's grace is applied to our lives even if we don't even attempt to keep God's commandments. That, my friends, is what I refer to as spiritual quicksand. For a more complete view of what is transpiring in this area, I refer you to someone much more qualified than myself to introduce you to the Grace Revolution and the phenomenon known as hyper-grace, cheap grace, greasy grace, etc. among those who see the dangers in this concept of God's will. Dr. Michael Brown has written a book entitled Hyper-Grace: Exposing the Dangers of the Modern Grace Message. That book is free on Kindle today (March 6, 2014). You can download it at http://www.amazon.com/Hyper-Grace-Exposing-Dangers-Modern-Message-ebook/dp/B00E78FTKW/ref=sr_1_1_title_0_main?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1394105009&sr=1-1&keywords=hyper-grace+exposing+the+dangers+of+the+modern+grace+message

I will be dealing with the topic of New Age religion in one of the next editorials. In reading Dr. Brown's awesome book on this topic, I saw that the New Age movement shares a common disregard for the commandments in their approach. A merger of the two might not be an unrealistic outcome. On a side note, a few years ago, a book entitled The Shack went viral. That book also took a dim view of the need to adhere to God's rule book, yet it was embraced with excitement by a large segment of the Christian population. False teachers seem to be standing on every street corner to convince us that we can have a relationship with God without obeying Him. That is the most slippery of slopes.
