God's Armor: Empathy went to students preparing for college entrance exams

Not another test!

As high school juniors and seniors dreamt about attending the college of their choice in one to two years, taking the entrance exam was brutal. In my case, the recent test from Writer’s Access had me wondering about my readiness for a job in anything academic. My empathy went out to those facing final exams and college entrance exams. They were designed with a high degree of difficulty.

After taking yesterday’s test on line with Writer‘s Access, it made me feel totally inadequate. After taking the same type of test from Writer’s Relief and failing twice, it was time to move on. Both of these tests had two strikes against them other than a high degree of difficulty. God’s Armor was needed:

  1. A lot of what was on these tests weren’t seen by me since my high school and college days.
  2. My industry experience in writing articles didn’t require writing such complex sentences.

At least with these two web sites, one was allowed to use the internet or whatever resource to look things up in getting the correct answer. With WyzAant, not only did the test have a time limit, using the internet wasn’t allowed. It was based on what one already knew about the subjects on which they tested.

The Bible said, in Ephesians 6:10-18:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. top; With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (NIV)

Here’s where my empathy went out to those about to take the SAT and ACT. Retired Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor, praised the new SAT format, which got rid of some of the vocabulary words and dropped the essay portion of the test. Even though my being familiar with fecund, its meaning escaped me without looking it up during the Writer‘s Access test. My college professor hated grading essay tests, given by blue book. He complained that half of the Constitutional Law class couldn’t write. Writing was the only thing that boosted my grades and my test scores in English and some of my Political Science classes.

Accessibility didn’t mean “watering it down”, making it easier for those on the lower economic spectrum to pass it. Just make tutorial services for those easier by making them free of charge. There were no computers or tutorial services available within my reach when taking the PSAT, or Practice SAT, as a sophomore in high school. Even though there was the Commodore 64, there weren’t any computer or tutorial services for the ACT within my reach either. My best bet was waiting until the age of 21 when those tests weren’t required.

My best part of the tests for Writer’s Access and Jobz For Writer’s was writing the paper. With the first website, they wanted a paper in APA, MLA, or Chicago Style complete with a citation page. An asset to me was being familiar with all three writing styles. Choosing APA for the first site and AP Style for the second site made altering the paper written on Great summer places to visit in Wichita Falls, Texas. Jobz For Writer’s phone lines were down, so they emailed the questions they wanted me to answer in essay format.

In spite of my disappointing test score, the good news was that their were ways for me to boost my star level at Writer‘s Access. My application was still pending at this time. They told me the position was mine yesterday. Maybe my profile would’ve helped boost me. The best moment was finding out Jobz For Writer’s hired me.
