'God' receipt waitress fired. An Applebee's waitress was fired for posting a rude customer's check online, according to an NBC News report which was posted earlier today.
Chelsea Welch says she waited on a large party hosted by Pastor Alois Bell of the World Deliverance Ministries Church in Granite City, Ill., and all was well... that is, until it came time to pay.
Welch said the Pastor Bell scribbled out the auto-generated 18% gratuity,which is added for larger parties, wrote "0" for "additional tip," and then left a snarky comment in its place.
"I give God 10%. Why do you get 18?"
Clearly there will be differing views on this, but if one cannot afford to leave a tip -- perhaps they should not dine at an establishment where they are aware people work for their tips.
That aside, the Applebee's waitress was "fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”
So now it is acceptable for people to stiff their server, then complain when people find out they went several steps beyond that by leaving a nasty note instead -- as long as its done on "religious grounds."
This does not sound very christian at all, and to know he pursued this to the point of the server being fired is a shame. That said, it was embarrassing for the customer, and she probably shouldn't have posted the check online.
In a statement posted yesterday Pastor Bell said she is sorry for what happened and points out that she left a $6.29 cash tip on the table. “My heart is really broken,” she said. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and my ministry.”
If she truly felt sorry for her embarrassing actions, why did she allegedly say she wanted all of the staff, and management at the Applebee's location Chelsea Welch worked at to be fired? Why, if she was truly sorry, did she persist in her complaint until the waitress was fired? This seems like a case of only feeling bad because she got caught.
Welch says she posted the note online because even though it was rather insulting, it was also comical. Also, she said in a statement to Yahoo! News that she was surprised at having been fired, but was more shocked at how Pastor Bell acted.
“I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty and blistered on a good day,” she said. “I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man used as reasoning.”
One thing is for certain, Chelsea Welch can eventually find another job, and still render great service. Meanwhile Pastor Bell will likely have a hard time living down her rude actions.
