Goals 2012, following the martial artist's path

As we wrap up the first month of 2012 we should reflect on what the month has brought us. Has it been success, reaching those small goals and having those “good days”, that leads to bigger accomplishments? Or has January only brought failure, missed opportunities, and roadblocks? Your goals, your efforts, they may not be enough to lead to success if you have surrounded yourself with the wrong type of people.

If you answered “roadblocks”, it may not be your goals or the effort you are putting in that is holding you back. It may be the people around you, those you call friends and the people you choose to follow, that cause you to miss the target. Your friends and role models can have a powerful effect on your ultimate success. Take a look around you, those who are successful surround themselves with others who are successful, those whom you consider to be “great” surround themselves with “greatness”.

A good martial artist knows that the surest way to learn new abilities is to hang around and learn from fellow martial artists who already know those techniques. They surround themselves with people who are better than they are, giving themselves the opportunity to learn and grow. The path of a martial artist is built upon a foundation of the knowledge of others, without good people to teach them it is impossible to become better.

In a good martial arts school you will see the principle of positive reinforcement in action. It is critical for your success that you find people who can, and will, encourage you to do the “right things”. Select the right people to help you and provide affirmation as you achieve your goals to accelerate your personal success. Having the wrong sort of person around you, one who sees only failure and encourages the wrong sort of actions and thinking, can stop you in your tracks.

Success could be as close as having the right relationships. Follow the path of the martial artist and surround yourself with the “greatness” you need to find success this year!
