April 22nd marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and it’s a great opportunity to reduce your carbon pawprint by going green with your pets! Best of all, it’s easy being green… check out these quick tips for how you can get involved.
Start with a Celebration
There’s no better place to celebrate than at the Nashville Earth Day Festival held on Saturday April 17th at Centennial Park. This fun, pet-friendly festival runs from 11am-7pm and features a variety of earth-friendly vendors, fresh foods, eclectic music and more.
Be sure to stop by the Nashville Paw Magazine booth for your chance to win an eco-friendly pet set, valued at $75.00! And, if you haven’t already, you’ll be able to pick up a copy of our special Green Issue, featuring local earth-friendly pet businesses, pet products and more.
For more event information, visit the festival website.
Opt for Eco-Friendly Pet Products
Why preserve your pet’s poop in a plastic bag for a hundred years when it can biodegrade naturally? Try scooping with a biodegradable waste pick-up bag such as the ones available from BioBag, Flush Doggy and Scoopies. And for kitties, try a biodegradable litter such as Swheat Scoop and World’s Best Cat Litter. They’re not only better for the earth, but the all-natural ingredients are safer and healthier for your feline friend than traditional clay litters.
When it comes to fun for Fido, I love the hemp toys, collars, leashes and beds made locally by Nashville-based Earth Dog, as well as the RecycleBone and RecycleBall toys from Planet Dog.
When treat time rolls around, choose all-natural, organic treats, such as the ones from Two Good Dogs, based right here in Nashville. Dogs truly go crazy for their Granola Barks treats! Another favorite are Barkwheats dog biscuits, which are wholesome for your pooch pal while also being easy on the earth. In fact, Barkwheats packages their yummy goodies in 100% recycled paperboard that is printed with vegetable-based inks. Now, that’s green!
Every small step towards a greener lifestyle makes a difference, whether it’s choosing natural grooming products, recycled pet beds or an eco-friendly harness. Small steps add up to big results when we all do our part!
