Go Girls or Stay Home!

December is Go Girls Month

Women have a much harder time getting their work produced than men do in this city. If you aren’t already aware of this fact, then go ahead read more about it. No matter how you slice it, women are the minority when it comes to being produced. So even though ladies' productions are on the upswing, I am very proud to say that everything I’m promoting this month is written, produced and directed by women.

From a staged reading of a classic play (written by a man, okay Shakespeare) that is produced by women, to a hilarious girl on the rise, to an evening of brand new short plays written and directed by women, there’s a little something for everyone.

Ending Soon

The Sugar House at The Edge of The Wilderness is a full-length play produced by Ma Yi Theater group, written by my former classmate, Carla Ching. She’s a talented writer who has always been able to create interesting work. The play is loosely based on the Hansel and Gretel story we all know. In this version the ‘house’ is the nut house with Twitter feeds. Catch ‘Sugar House’ before it closes Dec 4th.

It’s playing at the Connelly theater, 220 East 4th Street. Closes December 4th. For more information and tickets go to http://www.ma-yitheatre.org/.

Opening This Weekend

Exit Carolyn. This is another full-length play, a comedy written by one of my former colleagues and classmates, Jennie Eng. From the press release it sounds like a play about a death and a friendship, and it’s supposed to be funny. Do you have a friend that you'd like to dump because she's always late and not so nice? Yeah, take her to see this play. Either you'll make-up or break-up. Exit Carolyn is playing through December 17th at The Drilling Company Theater
236 W. 78th Street. For tickets and more information click here.

One Night Only

Monday, December 5th

Hero Theater will present a staged reading of As You Like It  by William Shakespeare

What’s cool about it? For ten bucks you’ll get to mingle with cool peeps, hear live musicians and get a drink. Hero Theater is also a new theater company with women at its helm.

The staged reading will take place at The Flea Theater, located in Tribeca at 41 White Street (between Broadway & Church Streets) on December 5th at 7:30pm.

Dec 8th and 15th - Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror is a one-woman show that celebrates the livelihood of multiple characters living in small towns. It's written by and stars my very funny friend Kelli Porterfield.

Kelli is the girl who can open her mouth, say nothing and make you laugh. Lucky for me, I was able to cast Kellie in one of my early plays, My Life As You. To put it mildly, she brought the house down with her athletic performance as a type-A nutcase. NYITA judges called her performance "genius."

Her solo comedy show Mirror Mirror is not to be missed. There are only 2 chances to see it before she packs up for LA.  Would someone please tell SNL’s casting crew to see her show?

Mirror Mirror performs on December 8th and the 15th at 7PM sharp at The Peoples Improv Theater ("Best NYC Comedy Venue"- The Voice), 123 East 24th Street
New York

Dec 1-18th

The Writer/Director Forum at The Looking Glass Theatre will present three evenings of short plays written and directed by women.

My play He Says His Name Is John is one of the plays being produced.

Without being impartial or anything, I’ll just tell you to go. Why? Because I’m a I’m one of the lucky ladies getting a production this December in NYC. For more information or to buy tickets, go to The Looking Glass Theater’s website.
