Online registration is closed for all events; however, you can register on Friday, March 14, 2014, for several of the events until they sell out at the Sports & Fitness Expo at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street.

The Dougherty family will be well-represented in Virginia Beach during Shamrock weekend. Team Dougherty is a multi-generation family group of siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews shown in the attached photos.

Ashley Dougherty takes charge each year of encouraging extended family members to participate in the Shamrock Marathon events. Some of the Dougherty family members will walk, some will run and some will marathon. The Dougherty family members take great joy in their Irish blood and their love of family.

The Shamrock Sports & Fitness Expo will be held Friday, March 14 from noon to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday's events include the TowneBank Shamrock 8k, the Leprechaun Dash for young runners, and the Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile for elementary school students.

The TowneBank Shamrock 8k begins at 7:45 a.m. Run or walk the course and enjoy the views on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. You can register for this event at the Expo on Friday.

Access College Foundation 8k Student Challenge is for middle school and high school students who have been training for nine weeks for the event. Students who have completed the training may register for this event at the Expo on Friday.

The Leprechaun Dash features young runners ages 6 months to 5 years. This 26.2 yard fun event begins at 10:30 and each participant receives a special finisher's medal. This event is sold out.

The Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile is for elementary school students. Participants who have run 25.2 miles at home or school will run the final mile of their marathon at 11 a.m. Students who have run 25.2 miles can register for this event at the Expo on Friday.

On Sunday, the Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon begins at 7 a.m. at the Cavalier on 42nd Street and ends at 31st Street on the Boardwalk. Participants must be at least 12 years old on March 16, 2014 to participate. The 13.1 mile event is sold out.

The Yuengling Shamrock Marathon begins at 8:30 a.m. The 26.2 mile event is a 2015 Boston Qualifier so expect to see some of the best runners on the East Coast. You must be at least 16 years old on March 16, 2014 to participate. You can register for this event at the Expo on Friday until it sells out.

Whether you're a runner or not, head down to Virginia Beach for the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon weekend and enjoy a great St. Patrick's Day weekend of fun.
