January 29 marks the official publication date for ‘Shadowhunters and Downworlder: A Mortal Instruments Reader’ published by Smart Pop Books. In this reader fans get analysis and more knowledge on various Mortal Instruments topics by a dozen YA authors and edited by Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare.

The cover is by Cliff Nielsen, who is responsible for many YA covers including The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. Another point of interest that stuck with me is that work on the palm of the hand is by designer Val Freire, who reportedly originally designed this artwork for Th3rd World’s Mortal Instruments comics. I love how the hands represent both “Shadowhunters” and “Downworlders.” I’ve had the privilege of reading an Advanced Readers Copy of the book and really love how the cover accurately depicts the theme of the reader. Leah Wilson of Smart Pop Books really summarizes the cover best, “I also love what Cliff did with the concept, managing to transform our scattered notes about teamwork and handclasps and cities into an image that packs a lot of meaning.”
