“Rumor has it that Halloween is second only to New Year’s Eve as the most raucous party day of the year for adults,” proclaims a member of the Gnarly Head’s coven. “What other occasion persuades adults to indulge in such debauchery? This is why Gnarly Head flourishes during this holiday. Even the old gnarled vines that produce our bold, brooding Old Vine Zinfandel look like a carpet of witches’ hands reaching up from the earth.”
The 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel ($11.99) is crafted from 35 to 80-year-old vines from the Lodi region. (Older vines produce fewer grape clusters that result in intense, concentrated fruit.) The deep purple wine has a jammy aroma with layers of black cherry, spice and mocha flavors. Pour this “sinful” selection with chili and spicy barbecued chicken.
Gnarly Head argues that their 2012 chardonnay ($9.99) can be “gnarly” because the wine is made with California’s spirit of adventure. Grapes from the Lodi area adds ripe, luscious fruit flavors while grapes from Monterey add crisp acidity and exciting citrus and tropical flavors. This medium-bodied wine is bursting with honeysuckle, green apple and white flowers aromas. Sophisticated pear and kiwi flavors pair delightfully with grilled shrimp and chicken Caesar salad.
