Most street races that involve a Honda NSX and Toyota Supra RZ twin turbo are rarely ever against an older GMC sport utility vehicle. However, the GMC Typhoon is a freak of nature with a Mitsubishi TD-06 turbo and Garrett water/air intercooler. Based on the popular GMC Jimmy which sold thousands of vehicles around the world, the GMC Typhoon was a limited edition that was produced from 1992 to 1993 with only 4697 units ever made! This ultra rare vehicle is at the top of most collector's lists due to it's enormous power and sleek, sleeper like appearance.
GMC Typhoon specifications:
- 4.3 liter V6
- TD-06 turbo charger
- All-wheel drive
- 0-60 in 5.3 seconds
- 300 whp dyno proven
- 360 ft. lb. of torque
- MSRP: $29,970.00 USD
The GMC Typhoon is powered by the famous 4.3 liter V-6 engine which is based on the popular Chevrolet 350 small block V8. This 4.3 liter features more than just a turbo and intercooler! It comes equipped ready to handle boost with forged pistons, larger intake manifold, stronger head gaskets, high pressure fuel system, and the 48mm twin-bore throttle body from the big brother 5.7 liter V8. These modifications allow boosting with out worry of blowing up the engine due to predetonation and engine knock.
Beyond the engine, the drive train of the GMC Typhoon starts with the bullet proof General Motor's 700R4 transmission connected to a BorgWarner transfer case. This setup is ideal for transferring the power generated by the turbo 4.3 liter into an all-wheel drive setup. By using all-wheel drive, the GMC Typhoon features an amazing 0-60 launch time of only 5.3 seconds! Compared to other trucks, SUV's, and sports cars, the GMC Typhoon is still one amazing vehicle. Check out the race footage below to understand just how powerful this classic SUV is when competing against Japan's finest sports cars.
