GM Could Steal Show in Detroit for 2014

There is a good chance that a great many of the attendees at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January will be rushing into Cobo Hall to see the recently introduced 2015 Ford Mustang but with a pair of sporty coupes of its own – General Motors is poised to steal the show. General Motors announced a while back that the brand new Cadillac ATS Coupe would debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show and just yesterday, GM added to their excitement by teasing the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that will also show its face for the first time in the Motor City.

The Cadillac ATS Coupe doesn’t come with a whole lot of mystery. We can expect it to be very similar to the ATS Sedan except it will only have two doors – and it will likely have less rear seat passenger space., The upside to the ATS Coupe is that it should offer a more exciting drive and those younger buyers who don’t want to be rocking the roomier sedan will likely flock to the sportier nature of the 2-door version of the ATS. We expect that the coupe will share many of the drivetrain options found in the current ATS sedan with a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder and the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6. We can also expect that the ATS Coupe will come with the buyer’s choice of an automatic or manual transmission but availability could vary depending on the engine chosen.

The more exciting and more mysterious debut scheduled for the 2014 Detroit Auto Show is the debut of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It has long been rumored that GM was working on a new, higher performance C7 Corvette for those who aren’t satisfied by the capabilities of the 2014 Corvette Stingray and although it was believed that this model would be called the Z07 – yesterday’s official announcement clarified that it will indeed be called the Z06. We don’t know exactly what will make the 2015 Corvette Z06 unique from the Corvette Stingray but GM has promised that this Z06 will be the “most track capable Corvette ever” thanks to unique drivetrain, chassis and body modifications. In short, we can expect an engine with vastly more power than the 460 offered by the Stingray, an even lighter chassis and a body that looks more aggressive and offers incredible aerodynamic properties for track use.
