This time of year almost feels like Christmas to me. Why you ask? Because this is the beginning of the trade show season and it is when companies introduce new gluten-free products that will be hitting store shelves throughout the year.
I wrote about some gluten-free products that made their debut at the Winter Fancy Foods show, but there are many more to come at Expo West in March. I will be live tweeting while at the Expo West show, so check back for a gluten-free product update.
Here is the scoop on what is coming, what is going, and what has changed:
New gluten-free products
- Donato's - is launching a retail line of gluten-free pizzas made with Udi's Gluten Free crust in three flavors: Cheese, Uncured Pepperoni, and Margherita. These pizzas are currently being test marketed in the freezer section of the Natural Foods Department of select Kroger stores in Central Ohio and West Virginia. - Earth Balance - recently announced their expansion into the snack category with the creation of four grab-and-go snacks: Vegan Buttery Flavor Popcorn, Vegan Aged White Cheddar Flavor Popcorn, Vegan Aged White Cheddar Flavor Puffs, and P.B. Popps, a sweet and salty popcorn treat.
- Glutino - is set to launch gluten-free toaster pastries in two flavors: Apple Cinnamon and Strawberry.
- Hearthy Foods - makes a line of pie shells and sweet and savory pie that can be ordered online. Their chicken pot pie caught my eye immediately, but their sweet and savory pies (available in small and large) looks quite tasty too. Their entire product line is also GFCO certified.
- Ready. Set. Cupcake - is a brand new company out of Florida offering a gluten-free line of frozen cake batter and frosting that allows the end user to bake their own cakes/cupcakes without the mess. Their products are GFCO certified gluten-free, vegan, and Kosher.
- Trader Joe's - has all-purpose gluten-free flour on store shelves for $3.99 for a one pound bag. This all-purpose flour does not contain any gums, so they will need to be added. Kim Bouldin reports that Iced Lemon Cookies can be found at the Trader Joe's in her area, but I have not seen them here in Georgia.
- Udi's Gluten Free -has announced several new products: granola bars in three flavors (Cranberry Almond, Chocolate Chip), single-serve Spinach and Feta and Three Cheese pizzas, and Tortillas.
- Van's Natural Foods - has branched out from it line of traditional breakfast foods and has added cold cereal, snack bars, and crackers to it gluten-free line. They now offer two flavors of cereal: Honey Nut Crunch and Cinnamon Heaven. Their snack bars come in Peanut Butter Chocolate, Cranberry Almond, and Chocolate Chip. There are also three kinds of baked crackers: Say Cheese, Lots of Everything, and Multigrain.
Discontinued gluten-free products
- Julian's Recipe - is discontinuing its line of gluten-free buttermilk pancakes (not potato pancakes), so if you love them, stock up now because once they are gone from stores, they are gone for good.
Recalled gluten-free products
- Applegate Farms - is recalling certain lot codes of its gluten-free chicken nuggets because they were mislabeled as gluten free when they contain wheat. The products were packaged on Sept. 19, 2012. The lot number “210864” and the best before date “08/28/13” are printed on each carton’s side panel. The UPC code “25317-00556” is printed on the back of each carton. The products were distributed to retail stores in Indiana, Maryland, Oregon and Washington. Consumers who purchased these products should return them to the store for a full refund.
Reformulated gluten-free products
- Good Season Italian Dressing Packet - this dry seasoning mix has had an ingredients change and it now contains gluten. This mix had been gluten free until recently, so if you can find it on store shelves stock up, but make sure to read the label first. More details can be found here.
