This Examiner first heard of Lulo's Cuban Cafe in Grayslake, IL, from a good friend several months back and couldn't wait to try it out. The thought of gluten-free Cuban food options made her mouth water.
Upon first entering the restaurant, she was warmly greeted by owner, Rick Felipez, who explained that just about everything on the menu could be made gluten-free with the exception of a small amount of menu options that are breaded and deep-fried, such as their breaded steak and croquettes. Check out the menu items here. The chef who works her magic with this awesome menu, is Rick's sister, Hayden Taylor. The restaurant is just coming up on its two-year anniversary in February 2014.
This Examiner decided to try the Cuban sandwich on flattened gluten-free bread. The sandwich was served warm and consisted of ham, roast pork, swiss cheese and sliced pickles. On the side, is a mojo dipping sauce, which is a mild mustard sauce. One bite was enough to know that this was a great find! The sandwich just melted in her mouth.
For dessert, this Examiner then tried the Lemon and Almond Polenta Cake. It was very delicious as well!
This Examiner has visited several times since then, they have great daily specials. They have outstanding soups and salads in addition to their sandwiches. They also have delicious entrees such as Arroz Con Pollo (Chicken with Rice). A favorite dessert item is their flan and yes, it is gluten-free! You seriously have to try it! They have some mighty awesome chocolate truffles you have to try as well!
On Fridays, they offer gluten-free fish and chips. This Examiner cannot think of anywhere else in Chicago that offers that, it is definitely worth making the trip for!
