More and more restaurants are popping up with gluten-free items on their menus, which is great if you have Celiac Disease or need to avoid gluten. Here are a few on the Main Line:

Up until recently, I've resisted visiting Melt Down Grilled Cheese restaurant. I mean, I can make my own grilled cheese, right in the comfort of my kitchen, for pennies, right? Why would I go out? To celebrate my youngest daughter's end of school year appearance on the Dean's List, of course!

Upon entering this fun, funky establishment, my eye was quickly drawn to the menu board, which stated that gluten-free bread was available upon request (for a measly dollar more.) It was hard to make up my mind: should I have the Classic or the Caprese? The Baja Melt or the Ham and Cheese? I ended up getting the Mix N Match, with a half Philly Cheese Steak Melt sandwich and a Berry Goat Salad, for 6.99. The sandwich was so good, I wish I had gotten the other half, too.

My non-GF dining partners were pleased with their meals, as well. My husband, who is from Maryland, enjoyed his Maryland Crab sandwich. Above-mentioned smarty-pants daughter ordered the Cheesy Caprese, but they got her order wrong. Instead, the Ham and Cheese arrived at our table. She decided she'd eat it anyway, and was glad she did. The surprising sweetness of the apple mustard really complemented the Artisan ham and Sharp Cheddar cheese, she said (I told you she was smart!)

Little touches, like the kids' dining/play area (complete with fun videos) and the New Hope Premium Fountain drinks (less sugar and other bad stuff than normal soda fountain drinks) make Melt Down Grilled Cheese a friendly, happy place.

When a gluten-free eater (like me) goes to a hamburger place, we're usually prepared to order just a burger, no bun. At the most, they can wrap the burger in a leaf of lettuce. Imagine my surprise, then, when I spotted a sign in Smashburger that said, "Now serving Udi's Gluten-Free rolls." Again, they tacked on an extra dollar, but that's okay. It was worth it. I was able to eat my burger like a normal (read: non-GF) person. And it was delicious. No frills--just a fresh, delicious classic hamburger with lettuce, tomato and pickles ($5.39.) Unfortunately, the fries are not GF; I had a side salad instead. Whether you eat gluten-free or not, Smashburger is worth the trip.
